I wouldn't count on any sort of severance though. Unless the soldier in question is being separated due to a larger force shaping measure (it doesn't read like that's happening...), those receiving discharges aren't typically awarded any money.

Length of (honorable) service is a factor there. If the soldier reenlisted (which generally grants an honorable discharge for that period of service) and then receives another discharge, they can still qualify for GI Bill even with a General Under Other Than Honorable Discharge...

The only compensation that I can think of would be disability. If you have any issues that came forth while your were serving then you are going to need to get your final exam done before you seperate. Once you seperate you need to take your DD Form 214 to the VA with all your medical records. Then you get another physical and the VA determines what percentage your are disabled.

Other than that you can still get the GI bill if you signed up for it. Dont forget to ask about the post 9-11 GI bill. In my opinion it is the better way to go when getting your education.
